By Stephanie Cole

If you have made the decision to take part in a race, it can be quite an exciting decision for you. However, if you want to succeed in the race, you need to have a plan in place and you need to practice. There are so many options out there. This can make it quite confusing for you to decide which program to enroll in. Here are some tips that can come in handy when you are considering which Folsom blues half marathon training program to choose.

There are different categories of runners. There are beginners, intermediate runners and more experienced runners. Assess yourself and choose the right category for you. You cannot join an advanced class if you are a couch potato since you will not be able to keep up with the exercises. You will need to start from where you are and gradually work your way to more advanced workout programs.

Select the right pacing for the race. To come up with a pace, determine what finishing time you are aiming for. This should be determined by how fit you are and should not be an idealized idea of trying to break a track record. After picking a pace, you can start practicing at this pace.

Select a program that is run by a professional coach. There are lots of programs and you can easily find yourself choosing a program that is run by an amateur. Check the credentials of the leader of the race, so that you are sure that you are following the lead of someone who knows what they are doing.

Choose a program that is flexible. Life happens and you may need to take a few days off or a couple of days off. You may get sick, injured or discouraged and decide to give the program a break for a while, your program should allow for this and not be too rigid. This will mainly require that you don't go for a program that has back to back running days.

Decide whether you want to practice alone or with other people. If you want to practice alone, get a coach to help you out. The coach will come up with a workout program for you. You also have the choice to work out as a group with other people.

You will get plenty of psyche if your friends can join you too. This will encourage you to keep going even during those days that you do not want to train. You can join a program that some of your friends are already in. Alternatively, you can try and convince some of your friends to join you.

Be open and willing to learn about how you can become a good athlete. Forget about all your other achievements in life when you get started in this program, so that you can just concentrate on coming up with a plan to finish the race. Be humble enough to listen to your trainer and to do what you have been asked.
